We take great care in selecting our breeding dogs, ensuring they have excellent temperaments, sound health, and a history of genetic health testing. We only breed dogs that meet high standards for physical and emotional well-being, ensuring our puppies inherit the best traits of this remarkable breed.
Our puppies are raised in our home with plenty of love, early socialization, and exposure to everyday family life. From the moment they’re born, we begin their journey toward becoming confident, well-adjusted companions. We believe that a good start is key to a happy life, which is why we focus on early neurological stimulation, crate training, and lots of socialization.
We also prioritize the long-term health of our dogs by performing comprehensive health screenings to ensure that our puppies are free from common hereditary issues. Each puppy goes home with a health guarantee, up-to-date vaccinations, and a microchip for identification.
We’re passionate about raising Lagotto Romagnolos that are not only beautiful but also mentally and physically fit, making them the perfect companions for active families and individuals alike.

Our Breeding Philosophy
At Shooting Star Water Dogs, our breeding philosophy centers on nurturing well-rounded, healthy, and joyful companions. Nestled in the rolling hills of Southern Wisconsin, our family of five shares our lives with Portuguese Water Dogs and Lagotti Romagnoli, raising them amidst a vibrant menagerie that includes chickens, pot-bellied pigs, and cats. Our dogs are more than pets—they’re integral members of our family, participating in daily activities, from playful romps on our 5-acre property to cozy movie nights on the couch.
We prioritize early socialization and comprehensive training to ensure each puppy develops into a confident and adaptable companion. Our commitment extends beyond the home; we actively engage in dog sports like Conformation, Tracking, Obedience, and Rally, and our dogs serve as therapy animals, bringing joy to nursing homes and schools. At Shooting Star, we believe in raising puppies with love, care, and a dedication to their physical and mental well-being, setting the foundation for a lifetime of companionship and adventure.
Health Testing
At Shooting Star, the health and well-being of our dogs—and the puppies we raise—are our top priorities. That’s why every dog in our breeding program undergoes comprehensive health testing in line with the recommendations of the Lagotto Romagnolo Club of America (LRCA). We also do the Basic Cardiac test, to make sure their heart is healthy.
Why Health Testing Matters
Health testing is about so much more than just “checking a few boxes.” It helps us ensure we’re producing puppies with the best possible start in life—genetically sound, physically healthy, and set up for long, happy lives with their families.
The Lagotto is a wonderful, ancient breed, but like all purebred dogs, they can be prone to certain inherited conditions. Responsible breeders work to reduce the risk of passing on these conditions through thorough and ethical screening practices.
