If you’re looking for a dog that’s smart, loving, and a little bit quirky, let us introduce you to the Lagotto Romagnolo. Often described as “the truffle dog,” this Italian breed has a rich history, an incredible nose, and a heart as big as their curls. At Shooting Star Lagotto, we believe this breed is something special—and we’re here to share why.

A Brief History
The Lagotto hails from the Romagna region of Italy, where they were originally bred as water retrievers. When wetlands were drained and hunting shifted, Lagotti (yep, that’s the plural!) found a new purpose: truffle hunting. Their strong scenting ability and trainable nature made them a natural fit.
Personality Plus
Lagotti are loyal, affectionate, and highly intelligent. They love to learn and thrive on mental stimulation. In the right environment, they’re playful goofballs who bond deeply with their people. But make no mistake—this breed isn’t for everyone. They need clear boundaries, consistent training, and plenty of enrichment to be their best selves.
Allergy-Friendly
Lagotti have a curly, wool-like coat that doesn’t shed much, making them a popular choice for people with allergies. While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, many allergy sufferers find they do well with this breed. Regular grooming is a must to keep that coat looking and feeling great.
A Perfect Fit
We’re biased, but we think Lagotti are perfect for all types of lifestyles. They’re hearty, happy in the snow, and just as content romping through the woods as they are curled up by the fire. They’re also a great size—big enough to keep up with an active lifestyle, but small enough to easily travel with you.
Is This the Right Breed for You?
The Lagotto Romagnolo is not a couch potato. They need thoughtful exercise, socialization, and training to stay balanced. But for the right person or family, the reward is a devoted companion who brings joy, laughter, and yes—maybe even a few truffles.
